WE HAD A BIG CROWD AT TUESDAY AFTER SCHOOL STUDY SESSION.

Sunday, September 16, 2018

Week of 9/17-9/24

Hot Topic: How much time should my child be spending on math homework each night? Well that depends on the assignment and your child. Homework should last anywhere between 15 minutes to possibly 1 hour. It should never last more than an hour. I try to give the students a few minutes at the end of class to get started on it. They have 10-20 minutes after lunch each day for study hall period. The important question that needs to be asked, Is you child using their time wisely? Some students choose to read their reading book at the end of my class period instead of getting a start on their homework. They need to take advantage of the 10-20 minutes after lunch to get some of their work completed. Students need a quiet place at home to work without distractions. They should not have their cell phones, television on, or searching on their Chromebooks during homework time. If they are truly focused on their math assignment then they should complete  it in an average amount time.

Cumulative Reviews (CRs) -Your child gets a CR every Monday. The CR is not meant to be done in one night. I tell the students to try to do one or two boxes each day. This way it will be completed by Friday. They always have a week to complete it. Cumulative reviews are problems that the students have already been taught the skill. They can use their notes/math book to help them if they have forgotten how to do any of the problems. They can come to me during study hall as well if they have any questions.

Binder Is your binder set-up correctly? We spent class time to set-up the binders. The binders should have a math section with the following dividers: Notes, Warm-ups, Homework, CR's, and Quizzes. Additional Sections for Science, Lang. Arts, and Social Studies. The Binder is a great resource if set-up correctly. There should never be any loose sheets. Every sheet should be in the correct subject area. The students should have the most current math notes on top in the note section. We will clean out binders at the end of each nine weeks. You should never get rid of hold CR's, Quizzes, or typed math notes. We will get rid of old homework/warm-ups at the end of each nine weeks. You can ask the other Team Teachers about what you need to keep for their classes. I would think after a unit test, then you could clean out that information to get ready for the next unit.

Take Advantage of the EXTRA HELP and EXTRA TIME 7:30-8:05 in room A113 Monday thru Friday there are teachers there to help you with your homework. If you don't need help, but just need a quiet place to get some work completed then head to the library.

Check the Online Agenda I do my best to write on the online agenda by Sunday afternoon. This gives you an opportunity to see what we are doing in the class for the week and when I am holding afternoon study sessions.

INOW I will try to have all grades up to date and posted by Tuesday night. You should check your grades once a week. Come to me or email me if you have any questions about your grade.

Week of 9/10-9/14

Regular Math: We will spend the first part of the week dividing with decimals. You have your first test coming up on Tuesday, 9/18. We will begin reviewing for the test on Thursday. I will hold an after school study session on Monday, 9/17 from 3:15-4:30. Please bring a note or have your parents email if you plan on coming to the study session. You will need  to arrange for a ride home. Please have someone come pick you up no later than 4:45. I will give you a break down on the types of problems that will be covered on the test later this week.

Advanced Math:  You have a Number Theory Quiz tomorrow. Remember that I posted the quiz review answers on Google Classroom. You should have checked your answers and studied over all notes from last week. I broke down every problem on the quiz for you on Friday. You will have your next Test on Wednesday, 9/19. I will have a study session on Tuesday, 9/18 from 3:15-4:30.

Advanced Decimal Retake Information: This is for anyone that made a C, D, or F on their decimal test. You are welcome to come after school this week on either Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday. Each session will be from 3:15-5:30. I will go over your test with you at the beginning of each session from 3:15-4:00ish then you can stay and retake the test. If you are unable to stay the whole session then maybe come for the first part for the review and choose another day to come and take the test. I know everyone has a busy life, but I hope by offering three days that you can find one that will fit your schedule. Please bring a note or have parents email if you plan on staying for any of the sessions. You will need to arrange for someone to pick you up no later than 5:45. If these dates do not work for you then we will work out something later to help you retake the test on another date.

For those that made a B or A, Congratulations! I have not forgotten about you. I want you to be able to correct your mistakes and better your score as well. I will get with you another time, but just not this week. I will work with you in the coming weeks during school hours, so stay tuned!

Sunday, August 26, 2018

All Math Classes:   You are doing a great job with getting your homework completed and turned in on time. Keep up the good work! Remember that you will get a CR each week and will have a week to work on it. Do not wait until Sunday night to complete it. Make it your goal to complete it by Friday, so you do not have to worry about it over the weekend. I suggest doing a few problems each day.

Grades are now in INOW! I will try to have all grades in and updated by Tuesday afternoons. Please check over your grades and let me know if you ever have a question about your grade.

Advanced Math this Week 8/27-8/31

You will have your first test on Thursday, 8/30. The test will cover adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing decimals. You will get your test review sheet on Monday. We will go over the answers in class on Tuesday. The test review will be your only homework this week, so make sure you study over your notes. I will have an afternoon study session on Wednesday from 3:15-4:30 for those that need extra help. Please bring a permission note if you plan on staying on Wednesday. Please make sure you make arrangements for a ride home after the study session.

Regular Math this Week 8/27-8/31

You will not have a test this week. This week we will focus on division of whole numbers. We will start out with 1 digit divisors on Monday/Tuesday then 2 digit divisors  starting on Wednesday.

WELCOME TO 6th GRADE MATH

I hope you have enjoyed the beginning of the start of this new school year here at Bumpus. We always have several things to do at the beginning of the year that will help us be successful all year long. Please look over the list below to make sure you have completed everything on the list.

1) Set-up Binder- Use the pocket folders and make sections for each subject:  Math, Lang. Arts, Science, and Social Studies. If you want to add a section for your Elective class that will be okay too. Behind the Math Section you need to use the plain dividers ( ones without pockets) to make the following sections: Notes, Warm-ups, Homework, CR's, and Quizzes. Your loose leaf paper should be in the back of the binder.

2) Join Google Classroom for you math class period. Here are the codes for each math period:

1st Regular Math - 4j7mnkt
2nd Regular Math- l727wk
3rd Advanced Math- v358q3
6th Advanced Math - mkugo45
7th Advanced Math- 1r3per

3) Set-up your math textbook online and save the information for easy access. There are no spaces in username and password.

Online Textbook:  my.hrw.com
Username: Bumpus2018-19
Password: team6-3

4) Get on IXL and start practicing skills on grade level 6 or level G. We will start out the year with adding, subtracting, multiplying, dividing whole numbers and decimals.

5) Share with your parents the math information note that I gave you in class. Tell your parents that my email address is kiwilliams@hoover.k12.al.us  and not kwilliams. Also, remind your parents about the school meeting on Monday, August 20th from 6:00-8:00. The meeting will give your parents a chance to meet all of your teachers and hear about the things we will be doing in 6th grade.

6) Pat yourself on the back because you have made it through the first whole week of school. 😊

Have a great weekend!
Ms. Williams
